DOCUMENTATION FOR MACMAN CLASSIC 2.0 _____________________________________________________ UPDATE _____________________________________________________ Macman 2.0 is an update to Macman 1.0.2. Most significant among added features are a high score list (see HALL OF FAME MENU), and animated interludes (see THE ACTS). In addition, several people were pretty irate that they could not use their favorite keys to control Macman, so this version allows ANY key on the keyboard to be used, except for CAPS LOCK (obviously) and the space bar (it's already the pause key). Lastly, the online documentation you are reading was added in 2.0. _____________________________________________________ COMPATIBILITY _____________________________________________________ Macman 2.0 was written on a Macintosh SE running System 6.0.7 and System 6.0.8. It should run on a Mac Plus or later without modification. Because of calls made to the Sound Manager, if you run Macman on a Mac Plus, you will not be able to turn the sound on. (Although the revised Sound Manager should be a part of system software 6.0.x, calls to the Sound Manager somehow cause a Mac Plus to crash.) Also, although the sound effects sound fine on my SE, they are sometimes reduced to just a soft buzz on faster Macs. Anyone know why? Macman is compatible with MultiFinder (200K partition recommended) and System 7.0. Macman will NOT run on a Mac 128, Mac 512, or Mac 512ke. If GateKeeper or other virus protection software complains that Macman's activity is suspicious (I'm not sure that it would), keep in mind that Macman makes changes to its own resource file in order to save preferences and high scores. _____________________________________________________ THE GAME _____________________________________________________ I have been told there was a game in the distant Mac past called MacMan -- this is NOT the same game. It is probably similar, because both games are based on the arcade classic Pacman. If you don't already know how to play, let me be the first to welcome you to the planet Earth. The object of the game is to munch as many dots, energizers, vulnerable ghosts, and fruits as possible while avoiding ghosts who are not vulnerable. There are 240 dots arranged in the paths of the maze, each worth 10 points. Once all dots and all energizers have been eaten, Macman advances one level and starts over with a new maze. The four large, blinking dots at the four corners of the maze are energizers. When Macman eats an energizer, the ghosts become vulnerable for a few precious seconds during which Macman can eat the ghosts for points. The first ghost is worth 200 points, the second 400, the third 800, and the fourth (if you're that good) 1600. After a few seconds, however, the ghosts begin to flash. When they stop flashing and return to their normal color, the tables are turned and they can eat Macman. Periodically, but never more than twice each level, a "fruit" will appear just below the ghosts' headquarters. Which fruit and its point value when eaten depends on the current level. When you have reached the "key" level, each successive level will be another key level. An extra life is rewarded for every 15,000 points accumulated. _____________________________________________________ THE ACTS _____________________________________________________ Due to popular demand, the little animated interludes (known sometimes as "The Acts") have been included in Macman 2.0. Act I appears after the Strawberry level, Act II after the 2nd Orange, and Act III after the 2nd Apple. Please note that the author designed the acts from memory, and a fuzzy memory at that, so they may not be perfect. _____________________________________________________ THE CONTROLS _____________________________________________________ The space bar pauses the game. After pausing, you can restart by hitting either the space bar or any of the control keys. Any click of the mouse will end a game currently in progress. See Set Keys… for info on how to choose the other control keys. _____________________________________________________ APPLE MENU _____________________________________________________ About Macman… gives you information on how to register your copy                of Macman and optionally, how to obtain the C                source code. Macman Docs… brings up this documentation window. _____________________________________________________ GAME MENU _____________________________________________________ Play play one game of Macman at the settings chosen. Quit            exit to the Finder. If any changes have been made                to the Hall of Fame, you will be asked if you want                to save the changes permanently or discard them. _____________________________________________________ EDIT MENU _____________________________________________________ For desk accessories only. Note: desk accessories can only be used when no game is currently in progress since a mouse click will end a game. _____________________________________________________ LEVEL MENU _____________________________________________________ Each menu item corresponds to a level of the game. Choose the level at which you want to start new games. Once the game has started, each completed maze will advance you to the next level. Note: key is the highest level, so every level after the key will be another key level. The game plays faster at each successive level until it reaches a stable speed (which is quite fast). _____________________________________________________ OPTIONS MENU _____________________________________________________ Turn Sound On        makes sound effects audible (if available). Is                    dimmed when sound is already on. Turn Sound Off turns off all sound effects. Dimmed when                    sound is already off. Tweak Speed…        brings up a dialog box allowing you to adjust                    (tweak) the speed of the game. Set Keys…           brings up a dialog box allowing you to                    customize the direction keys. Click on the                    arrow of the direction you want to customize                    and press the key you want to use. Click Okay                    when done. _____________________________________________________ CHEAT MENU _____________________________________________________ Three Lives, etc.       whichever option is checked is the number                     of men you will start the game with. Make Invincible        makes Macman invincible. When Macman is                     invincible, he can still eat vulnerable ghosts                     but he cannot die. The only way to end a                     game if Macman is invincible is with a mouse                     click. Dimmed if Macman is invincible. Make Vincible         opposite of Make Invincible. Dimmed if                     Macman is already vincible. Four ghosts, etc.       default is four enemy ghosts. You can adjust                     this, but you must have at least one (why                     would you want less?). _____________________________________________________ HALL OF FAME MENU _____________________________________________________ Show Hall of Fame      brings up the Macman Hall of Fame high                    score list. Clear Hall of Fame      erases all 8 Hall of Fame spots and replaces                    them with a generic name and a ridiculously                    low score. Because of the options Macman allows, more information is shown in the Hall of Fame than in most high score lists. The name of the player, the score, the level at which he started the game, the number of enemy ghosts and the number of lives with which the game was started are all represented for each of the 8 available Hall of Fame spots. The Hall of Fame is saved between games unless you specifically decline to do so (see Quit under GAME MENU). _____________________________________________________ PREFERENCES _____________________________________________________ Only the following settings are saved: 1)  Whether the sound is on or off. 2)  What level you prefer to start at. 3)  The "tweak" value. 4)  The keys you choose to control macman. Cheat menu settings are not saved. _____________________________________________________ SHAREWARE _____________________________________________________ This game is shareware.
